July 2010

Universities Heads of the Valleys Institute (UHOVI) is a ground breaking and exciting new education initiative for the Heads of the Valleys. UHOVI is committed to improving qualifications and skills in the Heads of the Valleys, ultimately contributing to the regeneration of the region.

For more information visit the UHOVI website

Backed by the Welsh Assembly Government, UHOVI is a strategic partnership between the University of Glamorgan and University of Wales, Newport. Working closely with further education colleges and training providers, local communities and businesses operating in the Heads of the Valleys, UHOVI will develop industry-specific skills tailored to the needs of the region.

Anyone living or working in the Heads of the Valleys can study with UHOVI. Courses range from short accredited taster sessions to degrees; learners will be offered the opportunity to progress to higher level study if and when they’re ready. Prior qualifications are not always necessary, as UHOVI considers life and work experiences too.

UHOVI courses fall into three main categories:

Bite-Sized Learning
These learning modules are the perfect introduction to studying with UHOVI and can count towards further study. Courses take between 10 and 20 hours to complete and will be offered in a wide range of subjects.

Foundation Degrees
UHOVI Foundation Degrees are especially designed to provide relevant skills and knowledge for the region’s existing or growing industries. Academic study is combined with employment-based learning in key subject areas.

Work-Based Learning
UHOVI provides tailored learning for businesses in the Heads of the Valleys. Learning programmes focus on enhancing the skills and knowledge of staff from short accredited courses to professional qualifications.

A selection of UHOVI courses start in Autumn 2010. Further courses are in development and the breadth of offer will expand as UHOVI grows over the next few years.
