Revd Dr Gareth Leyshon, an Associate Chaplain of the University of Glamorgan, was guest of honour last month at a special service at the University of Jos, Nigeria.
Dr Leyshon travelled to Nigeria at the request of a recent graduate of the Faculty of Advanced Technology, William Cocodia, in order to conduct Mr Cocodia’s wedding on 14th February in Benin City.
During his visit to Nigeria Dr Leyshon also visited Jos, a city in the Middle Belt of Nigeria, to inspect the work of the Catholic international development agency, Cafod. Knowing that he was a university chaplain, the religious sisters hosting his visit had arranged for him to celebrate a midweek religious service at their local university.
More than 200 students turned up to witness this rare visit of a European chaplain. Fr Dr Leyshon preached on the set text for the day – creatively using the story of Noah sending out a raven and a dove as a prototype of academic research. After the service, he was presented with a card and gift by the student president of the local branch of the Nigerian Federation of Catholic Students.
On returning to his duties at Glamorgan, Dr Leyshon said that he was honoured by the number of students who had turned up to mark his visit, and that his experiences in Nigeria had left him better prepared to minister to international students in the UK.
