Car parking amendments for the start of the academic year 2009

September 14, 2009

Important information for staff regarding car parking

The staff, visitor and student car parking arrangements for Treforest and Glyntaff campuses have been comprehensively reviewed ahead of the start of the 2009 academic year to determine the likely effects of parking capacity on both campuses as a result of the University’s academic and estates development programme.

The review found that the usual start of autumn term parking congestion is likely to be experienced again this year, although the impact could be reduced with careful journey planning and consideration of other forms of transport at peak times. Our position and the measures we are taking are set out below:

  • Overall there will be more available car parking across the two sites, with new Lower and Upper Glyntaff parking facilities coming on-line by the end of September 2009
  • HeSaS’s move across to Glyntaff will see around 1800 students and 120 staff moving from the Treforest campus, further improving the balance of demand for spaces across the two sites
  • An improved shuttle bus service will increase access between the two campuses and make parking at Glyntaff a more viable option for Treforest-based staff – and vice versa. More details of the new service can be found on Inform and below

However, demand for parking on both campuses, particularly at the start of term, is still likely to be very high. In addition this year, the local authorities and police have firmly asserted that they will not tolerate the usual disruptions to local highways from traffic queuing to get into the car parks and will be taking action to move on any traffic causing obstruction.

As such, we are taking a number of measures to help reduce the volume of traffic at peak times, including:

  • Designating the car park opposite the University on Llantwit Road as a Student and Visitor Car Park only and removing access to the car park for users with a staff-designated parking permit during term time
  • Stationing stewards on and around the slip roads off the A470 to redirect queuing traffic to alternative car parks in Sardis Rd, Berw Rd and the Goods Yard, Pontypridd
  • Providing couriers in these car parks to direct people to campus, via the very regular train service from Pontypridd to Treforest or by a shuttle bus provision
  • Providing stewards to manage traffic flows into Glyntaff and lengthening the time lapse on the traffic lights for cars turning right into Cemetery Road

The University strongly advises all staff, students and visitors to consider alternative travel arrangements to driving during the start of the autumn term wherever possible.

Tips for travel

Please consider the following options:

  • Regular train services running between Merthyr and Cardiff every 12 minutes at peak times and Park and Ride schemes are available from some stations: more information available on the Arriva Trains Wales website
  • Frequent bus services to Pontypridd stopping outside the Treforest campus approximately every 15 minutes and Glyntaff every 24 minutes: more information available at http://www.traveline-cymru.info/
  • Public car parks are also available in Sardis Rd, Berw Rd and the Goods Yard, Pontypridd, and regular trains run to Treforest from Pontypridd, with a journey tiem of around 3 minutes
  • Car share with colleagues living close to you: more information available on the Travel for Staff pages of Inform
  • If driving all the way to campus is your only viable option, consider aiming to get to work slightly earlier to avoid peak times
  • Treforest-based staff could also consider parking at Glyntaff and catching the shuttle bus

More details on all of the travel options available can be found by visiting the Travel for Staff pages on Inform.
